Fluoxetine
What is fluoxetine?
Fluoxetine (brand names: Prozac®, Reconcile®, Sarafem®) is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) antidepressant used to treat a variety of behavioral disorders in dogs and cats. The FDA & Health Canada approved branded tablets for dogs are labeled to treat separation anxiety. Your veterinarian may decide to prescribe Fluoxetine for:
- fear-aggression or,
- generalised anxiety/fearful behaviour.
Its use in cats, dogs, and birds to treat certain behavioral conditions is “off label” or “extra label”. Many drugs are commonly prescribed for off-label use in veterinary medicine. In these instances, follow your veterinarian’s directions.
How is fluoxetine given?
- Fluoxetine is given by mouth, in the form of a tablet, capsule, or liquid.
- It is given every 24 hours.
This medication can take up to 8 weeks to achieve major positive effects. However, we typically start to see subtle improvements in behaviour just 5 days into treatment.
What if I miss giving my pet the medication?
If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember, and then continue with the regular dosing schedule. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not give the pet two doses at once.
Are there any potential side effects?
Like any medication, Fluoxetine can sometimes cause side effects such as:
- sleepiness, decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, restlessness, panting, whining/vocalization, incoordination, hypersalivation, weight loss.
In cats, side effects may include:
- anxiety, irritability, lack of appetite, diarrhea, changes in sleep, changes in bathroom behaviour.
Rarely, we might see more serious adverse reactions. Contact your veterinarian immediately if any of the following occur:
- seizures, aggression , excessive/persistent vomiting.
Note that your veterinarian will initiate dosing in a manner which minimises the chance of you pet experiencing side effects.
Are there any drug interactions I should be aware of?
Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.
Is any monitoring needed with this medication?
- No specific monitoring is required while your pet is taking this medication.
- Your veterinarian will appreciate frequent progress reports during the first few months of treatment.
How do I store fluoxetine?
- Store this medication in a tightly closed container at room temperature between 20°C and 25°C.
- Protect from moisture and light.
- For compounded forms of this medication, follow the directions on the label.
